Dominique Sluse, who has been passionate about astronomy since childhood, joined the University of Liège to study physics and astrophysics. His doctoral thesis focused on the observational study of gravitational mirages, carried out jointly by the University of Liège and the European Southern Observatory in Chile. In 2005, he joined the astrophysics laboratory of the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne for a first post-doctorate aimed at using gravitational mirages to measure the expansion rate of the Universe. In 2008, as a Humboldt fellow, he joined the University of Heidelberg, where he expanded his research to develop the use of gravitational microlenses to reveal the structure of the central regions of galaxies.
In 2011, he moved to the University of Bonn, continuing his research in various fields of extragalactic astrophysics and observational cosmology. Returning to ULiège in 2014 thanks to a BELSPO "return scholarship", he was appointed Senior Research Logistician in 2018. He is consolidating the development of the cosmographic use of gravitational lenses with financial support from the European Research Council through the COSMICLENS project.
The research of Dominique Sluse and his team covers a wide thematic spectrum, including the history of the Universe studied with the aid of gravitational lenses, dark matter on the galactic scale, the structure of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and the accretion of matter and gas by the central black holes they host. Finally, he is also interested in exotic AGNs with unusual properties, such as binary AGNs.
